Glaucoma in pets is a painful condition caused by increased pressure inside the eye, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss or blindness if not treated promptly. It is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam that includes measuring intraocular pressure (tonometry), evaluating eye structures and vision, and performing gonioscopy—an advanced test that assesses the eye’s drainage angle to help determine glaucoma risk and type.
While glaucoma cannot be cured, treatment focuses on rapidly lowering eye pressure, preserving vision when possible, and maintaining comfort through medications or, in advanced cases, surgical or comfort procedures. Because glaucoma often affects both eyes over time, prophylactic treatment of the unaffected eye may be recommended.
